Weather Conditions

Rain, fog and low light need more following distance, lower speed and correct use of lights. Plan to stop if visibility is very poor.

Key Rules

  • Increase the gap to the vehicle ahead on wet roads.
  • In dense fog, slow down and use appropriate lights; avoid high beam if it reflects back.
  • Aquaplaning: ease off the accelerator smoothly and avoid harsh braking.
  • Clean windscreen and wipers improve visibility — check before you drive.

Common Mistakes

  • Keeping dry-road speed when it rains.
  • Following too closely because 'it is only light rain'.

Practical Example

Heavy rain starts on the freeway. You slow down, widen the gap, use low beam and avoid sudden steering.

Quick Check

  • Why does a wet road increase braking distance?
  • What should you do if you feel aquaplaning?
  • Do high beams always help in fog?
