Towing Rules WA

Towing a trailer or caravan in WA comes with specific speed limits, weight restrictions, and licence conditions. Learner drivers may not tow. P1 drivers have restrictions.

Key Rules

  • Learner drivers: cannot tow any trailer or caravan.
  • Maximum towing speed: 100 km/h (or the signed limit if lower). On some roads, towing vehicles are limited to 90 km/h — check local signs.
  • All trailer lights (brake, indicator, tail) must work. Safety chains are mandatory.

Common Mistakes

  • Learner drivers attempting to tow — this is not permitted under any circumstances.

Practical Example

David has a learner licence and wants to tow a small boat trailer to the beach. He cannot — learner drivers are not permitted to tow regardless of trailer size or weight.

Quick Check

  • Can a learner driver tow a small trailer? → No. Towing is not permitted for learner drivers.
