Speed Limits
The speed limit is the legal maximum in ideal conditions, not a target. You must slow down when there is traffic, rain, poor visibility, road works, pedestrians or cyclists.
Key Rules
- Never drive above the posted speed limit.
- In built-up areas without signs, follow the default applicable limit.
- At road works, always follow the temporary speed limit shown on signs.
- Slow down when the road, weather, visibility or traffic conditions are not ideal.
Common Mistakes
- Thinking the speed limit is the speed you should aim for.
- Keeping the maximum speed during rain, road works or near pedestrians.
Practical Example
You are on a 50 km/h road, but it is raining heavily and pedestrians are near a crossing. Even if the limit is 50, it may be safer to drive below that.
Quick Check
- Is the speed limit always the safest speed?
- What should you do at road works?
- Why should you slow down near pedestrians and cyclists?
