Shared Zones and Pedestrian Areas WA
In shared zones, pedestrians and vehicles share the same space. Vehicles must give way to pedestrians at all times. The maximum speed in a shared zone is 10 km/h.
Key Rules
- Maximum speed: 10 km/h in shared zones — typically in pedestrian malls and laneways.
- Vehicles must give way to all pedestrians — pedestrians have absolute right of way in shared zones.
- Shared zone signs mark entry and exit points. If no speed sign is visible inside the zone, assume 10 km/h.
Common Mistakes
- Driving at 20 km/h thinking it is close enough — 10 km/h is the strict limit.
Practical Example
You enter a shared zone laneway. A pedestrian is walking in the middle of the road ahead. You must give way — do not honk or expect them to move out of the way.
Quick Check
- What is the speed limit in a shared zone? → 10 km/h.
