School Zones Speed Limits WA

School zones have a 40 km/h speed limit during school arrival and departure times. The limit applies even if no children are visible. Penalties are significantly higher in school zones.

Key Rules

  • Speed limit: 40 km/h in school zones on school days (approx. 7:30–9:00 am and 2:30–4:00 pm). Check local signage — times can vary.
  • Flashing yellow lights or electronic signs indicate when the 40 km/h zone is active.
  • Doubled demerit points and higher fines apply in school zones. Mobile phone use is an additional offence.

Common Mistakes

  • Driving at 50 km/h thinking school is out — the zone applies whenever signs/lights indicate, regardless of visible students.

Practical Example

You drive past a school at 3:00 pm on a Tuesday. Flashing lights are on. You must drive at 40 km/h through the zone even though no children are crossing.

Quick Check

  • What is the speed limit in a school zone when lights are flashing? → 40 km/h.
