Road Markings

Road markings show where you should drive, when you may change lanes, where to stop and which areas must remain clear.

Key Rules

  • A broken line may be crossed when it is safe and legal.
  • A continuous line generally means you must not cross it.
  • Stop lines show where you must stop at signs and traffic lights.
  • Painted areas and traffic islands are generally not for driving.

Common Mistakes

  • Changing lanes across a continuous line.
  • Stopping after the stop line.

Practical Example

You want to change lanes, but there is a continuous line between lanes. Wait until the marking allows a lane change.

Quick Check

  • When may a broken line be crossed?
  • What does a continuous line generally mean?
  • Where must you stop at a STOP sign with a stop line?
