Overtaking
Overtake only when centre lines allow, visibility is good and you can return with a safe margin. Respect minimum passing distances for cyclists.
Key Rules
- Never overtake where signs or continuous lines prohibit it.
- In WA, keep at least 1 m lateral clearance when passing cyclists on roads up to 60 km/h and 1.5 m above that.
- Do not overtake on bends or crests with reduced visibility.
- Return to your lane only when you can see the overtaken vehicle safely in your mirror.
Common Mistakes
- Passing too close to a cyclist.
- Overtaking multiple vehicles in one manoeuvre without planning the exit.
Practical Example
You follow a slow car where the line is broken and visibility is clear. Signal, accelerate smoothly, pass and return leaving a safe gap.
Quick Check
- When is overtaking prohibited by a continuous line?
- Why do cyclists need more lateral space?
- What should you check before returning to your lane?
