Lane Changing

Lane changes are safe only after mirrors, head checks and signalling. Continuous lines and areas near intersections often prohibit lane changes.

Key Rules

  • Check mirrors and blind spots before each lane change.
  • Signal early and move only when there is a safe gap.
  • Do not cross a continuous line where it prohibits changing lanes.
  • In congestion, sudden lane changes increase side-impact risk.

Common Mistakes

  • Changing lanes using only the rear mirror, with no head check.
  • Signalling and moving at once, with no time for others to react.

Practical Example

You want the right lane to exit. Indicate, shoulder check, see a vehicle in the gap and wait until it passes before moving.

Quick Check

  • What order: mirror, blind spot or signal first?
  • When does a continuous line prevent a lane change?
  • Why does the blind spot matter?
