Give Way Rules
Give way rules prevent conflicts at intersections, turns and places without signals. When in doubt, slow down, scan carefully and proceed only when safe.
Key Rules
- At uncontrolled intersections, you generally give way to vehicles on your right.
- At a STOP sign, come to a complete stop before proceeding.
- When turning, give way to pedestrians crossing the road you are entering.
- When turning right, give way to oncoming traffic going straight ahead.
Common Mistakes
- Only slowing down at a STOP sign without stopping completely.
- Turning without checking pedestrians on the road you are entering.
Practical Example
You want to turn right at an intersection. An oncoming vehicle is going straight ahead. You must wait and give way before turning.
Quick Check
- What does a complete stop at a STOP sign mean?
- Who has priority at an uncontrolled intersection?
- Who must you give way to when turning?
