Alcohol & BAC

Alcohol and drugs affect judgement, vision, concentration, reaction time and confidence. For novice drivers, the rule is zero BAC.

Key Rules

  • Novice drivers are subject to a zero alcohol limit.
  • For other drivers, the general limit is 0.05 BAC.
  • Coffee, water or soft drinks do not remove alcohol from your body. Only time does.
  • Combining alcohol with drugs or medication can greatly increase risk.

Common Mistakes

  • Thinking it is fine to drive after only a small amount of alcohol.
  • Believing coffee or a cold shower reduces BAC.

Practical Example

You drank an hour ago and feel fine. Your BAC may still be rising. If you plan to drive, the safe option is not to drink.

Quick Check

  • What is the alcohol limit for novice drivers?
  • Does coffee reduce BAC?
  • Why does alcohol create false confidence?
