Your WA licence journey
From learner to full licence. The whole path
Western Australia's licence is a sequence of steps. Here's the whole journey, and where KangaLearner helps at each stage.
- Step 1
Learner licence (from 16)
Pass the Computerised Theory Test (CTT), then build real driving experience under supervision.
- Pass the Computerised Theory Test (CTT) (24/30). KangaLearner prepares you free, in your language.
- Zero BAC, L plates front and back, and a supervising driver at all times.
- Under 25: log at least 50 supervised hours, including 5 at night.
- Hold your learner licence for at least 6 months before the Practical Driving Assessment (PDA). The 6 months applies to every learner, any age — only the 50 supervised hours are waived at 25+.
- Step 2
Provisional (Red P → Green P) (from 17)
Zero BAC and P plates, held for at least 24 months.
- Pass the Hazard Perception Test (HPT) and the Practical Driving Assessment (PDA) to get your Ps.
- One provisional stage: 2 years (or until 19, whichever is longer). Red plates for the first 6 months bring a midnight–5am driving ban and a one-passenger limit; green plates for the remaining 18 months. Zero BAC throughout.
- Step 3
Full licence
Restrictions lifted. The general BAC limit (0.05) applies.
- Keep driving safely. Most crashes happen in the first years of solo driving.
